Open memo to the Royal School District, parents, and community members regarding athletics

I hope that this letter finds everyone safe and doing well during this unfortunate time period in our community, county, state, and country. The Royal School District has been in steady contact with the WIAA, the South Central Athletic Conference, and the Grant County Health District in regards to our ability to open our facilities in the most effective, efficient, and safe manner. The Royal School District understands and believes physical activity and competitive athletics are critical to the physical and mental well-being of our student athletes when it can be carried out safely. With that being said, the South Central Athletic Conference and the Mid-Columbia Middle Schools Activities Association are diligently working to determine all game schedules for the 2020-2021 athletic season. Below you will find all WIAA updates and reminders in regards to the 2020-2021 athletics and activities. If you have any questions, please contact me at 509-346-2256 ext: 3950 or gwinston@royalsd.org.

Modified WIAA Athletic Seasons:

In August, the WIAA Executive Board created and voted to allow 4 modified seasons for the 2020-2021 school year: Season #1 was designed to start September 7th and end November 1st. It also was designed as an “Alternate Season” for a number of sports in school districts where the county meets the COVID guidelines that have been established. As of now, the South Central Athletic Conference and Mid-Columbia Middle Schools Activities Association will not have any schools participating in athletic competitions during season #1.

Season #2 is expected to start December 28th and end on February 27th. It will consist of Basketball, Boys Swimming & Dive, Gymnastics, Girls Bowling, and Wrestling. Season #3 will start on March 1st and end on May 1st. It will consist of Football, Volleyball, Girls Soccer, Cheerleading, Girls Swim & Dive, Cross Country, and Slow-Pitch Softball. Season #4 will start April 26th and end on June 26th. It will consist of Golf, Tennis, Fast-Pitch Softball, Track & Field, Baseball, Boys Soccer, and Dance/Drill.

Middle School – Mid Columbia Middle Schools Activities Association:

The Mid-Columbia Middle Schools Activities Association is engaged in preliminary discussions. In the meantime, athletic directors are waiting for more guidance from the WIAA, as they are continuously meeting and making recommendations. Currently, the plan is for the athletics at the middle school level to follow the same guidance that has been given to the high school level. This means the middle school season’s contest will also be reduced to 70%.

High School - South Central Athletic Conference Game Schedules:

Schedules that were previously created have since been removed from the league website. The SCAC athletic directors meet regularly in order to gain clarity on the season modifications and proposed post-season play. Playable dates will be decided by pre-season practice requirements and how much time will be needed for the entire post-season.

Fall Coaching Period (Sept. 28th to Nov. 30th) Breakdown:

The WIAA has created a nine-week stretch that extends the opportunity for coaches at the middle school and high school level to work with student athletes out of season. This was done in an effort to help with the summer that was lost due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, this time period will significantly impact our facilities, athletes, and coaches with managing their time and being mindful of others’ time. At no point should any coach convince or encourage student athletes not to play other sports during this period. With everything that is currently going on, our student athletes, coaches, and community have suffered enough. This is an opportunity our student athletes need, as there are key character traits gained from athletics. Furthermore, keep in mind that this open coaching period is contingent upon Grant County Health District permitting us to resume with all athletics and activities.

Coaches/Advisors wishing to participate in the Fall Coaching period must complete the following 4 steps:

1.) Create a “Return to Play Activities Safety Plan” for your sport/activity based on WIAA COVId-19 Guidance and the Royal School District Reopening Plan.
    A) Coaches/Teams will be required to follow this plan in accordance with the safety guidelines.
2.) Each athlete must be registered on Final Forms and approved by the athletic department.
3.) Gain Royal School District approval once the above steps are completed and submitted.

COVID Screening:

Royal School District requires that coaches and student athletes comply with all COVID-19 safety procedures, including pre-assembly screening. The Final Forms attendance app will be the tool used to screen student athletes and will be a daily requirement for all coaching staffs.

Below you will find an idea of what we have created in order to effectively divide up the nine weeks. By no means does this have to be the final decision, but it gives us a solid idea in how we can manage and facilitate our student athletes.

- WIAA Fall Open Coaching Period -

  • Week 1 – 9/28: Fall Sports = Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday; Winter Sports = Thursday, Friday, Saturday
  • Week 2 – 10/5: Spring Sports = Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday; Fall Sports = Thursday, Friday, Saturday

  • Week 9 – 11/23: Winter Sports = Monday, Tuesday Wednesday; Spring Sports = Thursday, Friday, Saturday (Thanksgiving Break Thursday & Friday)

Coaching Contracts:

The Royal School District administration team has been engaged in discussions over the past couple of weeks to determine the best way to address coaching contracts. In the meantime, with the start of the 2020-2021 athletic seasons being delayed, all coach and activity advisor stipends will be delayed until the season/activity resumes. Coaching and activity stipends may also be reduced to reflect the shortened season/activity. Furthermore, due to the athletic seasons being moved to address the COVID-19 pandemic, it may be a reality that coaches may not be able to coach at all during their specific season.

Helpful WIAA Reminders:

  • Schools must adhere to all COVID-19 requirements and protocols.
  • Teams/Individuals that do not qualify for the culminating events may continue to compete/practice during the culminating week.
  • Athletic seasons will allow for 70% of allowable contest (WIAA Handbook).
  • New allowable coaching period from Sept. 28th- Nov. 30th (All dependent upon Grant County Health District).
