Continuous Learning

Continuous Distance Learning

Our district’s overarching goal through “continuous learning” is to establish and maintain connections with students and families in order to provide learning materials and supports using a variety of methods.

As our district moves forward with our Continuous Learning plan, Royal teachers will do the following:

  1. Develop learning goals and expectations for each class
  2. Provide weekly “office hours” (either via email or other communication method) to be available to answer questions, provide support, and document student contacts
  3. Engage students in continuous learning to maintain or improve their mastery of essential standards
  4. Monitor student progress/provide support and feedback to students
  5. Notify students of the platform they will be using to deliver instructional materials and activities to their students:
    • Many teachers are using Google Classroom to engage students in learning activities. Students who are unable to access Google Classroom should contact their school to request materials in a different format/delivery.

Printed Learning Packets

Printed copies of learning packets for all grade levels will continue to be provided through June 19th. Packets will be delivered via bus at the designated meal delivery sites and times each week* on Tuesdays and Fridays. Packets will also be available in front of the school buildings.

* Learning packets for students in Kindergarten to 3rd grade will be made available to students every two weeks. Please contact your child’s teacher for details.

Expected daily student time commitments by grade level:

  • Pre-K: 30 Minutes
  • Grades K-1: 45 Minutes
  • Grades 2-3: 60 Minutes
  • Grades 4-5: 90 Minutes
  • Grades 6-8: 20 minutes per class (2.5 hours maximum per day)
  • Grades 9-12: 30 minutes per class (3 hours maximum per day)

Students should stay in contact with their teachers. Your child has received communication from his/her teacher establishing how and when assignments will be posted and feedback will be provided. Office hours will vary. Teachers will communicate their office hours to individual students/families.

Even though in-person instruction has ended, learning will continue! We encourage all of our students to keep engaging with learning activities and projects as we roll out our Continuous Learning Plan.

What has been done to date:

  • Meals:

After the Governor’s initial announcement to close schools beginning March 17th, Royal School District began delivering free breakfast and lunch meals at designated locations.
  • Teacher-to-Student Check In:

Teachers have been reaching out to students and families to check in and make sure students have access to the food and learning resources they need.
  • Learning Packets:

Educational resource packets for at-home learning were made available to students beginning March 23rd. Packets and resources have been uploaded onto the district website at royalsd.org/families/covid19/ed_resources and distributed alongside the meals each week. Copies of the packets have also been made available outside each school building.
  • Chromebook Distribution:

Students in all grade levels in Royal School District have now received Chromebooks.
    • On April 2nd, Chromebooks were distributed to all 9th-12th grade students at Royal High School.
    • On April 23-24, Chromebooks were distributed to students in kindergarten to 5th grade.
    • Students in 7th-8th grade at Royal Middle School already received their Chromebooks earlier this year.
  • Staff training:

Royal staff have been engaged in digital technology training to become more familiar with the essential tools required for effective distance learning.

What you can expect moving forward:

  1. Meals will continue to be delivered through June 19th.

Providing meals for our students remains an essential function. Meals are delivered on Tuesdays and Fridays only, from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM at the designated sites. Meals also are available for pick up at the high school cafeteria from 3:00-6:00 PM on Tuesdays and Fridays. Please call 509-949-0674 the day before, so we can have your meals ready. You can find more information at royalsd.org/families/covid19/food_services.
  2. Teachers will continue engaging students in new learning activities each week.

Teachers will deliver content consistent with the tools and resources accessible to each student. Instruction may come in many forms, using a combination of weekly assignments, projects, and audio/video check-ins to assess learning and provide feedback.
  3. Learning will continue now through June 19th.

The last day of school has been set as Friday, June 19th, based on the agreed-upon waivers provided by OSPI. From now until then, continuous learning will focus on core learning standards and learning activities that will help students progress and prepare for the next level.
  4. Students should stay in contact with their teachers.

Your child has received communication from his/her teacher establishing how and when assignments will be posted and feedback will be provided. Office hours will vary. Teachers will communicate their office hours to individual students/families.

We thank you for your patience as we await further guidance from OSPI (Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction) regarding grading and the options we will have as a district. We encourage all of our students to keep up with the assignments and projects as we roll out our Continuous Learning Plan on April 27.

Each student and each family is unique, which means continuous learning will not look the same for every student. If you have any questions at all, please reach out to your child’s teacher(s) or principal. You can also contact the District Office at 509-346-2222 between 8 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. We will continue to communicate updates on our website, Facebook page, and through automated phone calls. Please reach out if you have questions or need further assistance.
