Inclement weather, such as snow and ice, as well as COVID-related issues may cause changes to our schools’ operating status from time to time. The safety of our students and staff is Royal School District’s top priority. We want to assure that our entire school community knows what to do and where to go for information and plans this winter. Please visit our Weather Delays webpage HERE to read complete details on the decision-making process.

Announcements about operating status will be made:

  • Through Automated phone calls (robocalls)
  • On our Facebook page at
  • On the home page of our district website
  • On local radio stations

What should Royal students and families expect during inclement weather?

  • All students in kindergarten to 12th grade should take their Chromebook to and from school in their backpack each day so that they always have access to this technology if school is required to switch to 100% remote learning.
  • RSD will announce our decision to make any changes to school opening status by 6:00 AM.
If weather and road conditions are predicted to improve, a 2 hr. and 45 min. delay will be announced (the same schedule as our current late-start Fridays). Two-hour and 45 minute delays will NOT be remote learning days.
    • If the District chooses to switch to a remote learning day, the announcement will be made that in-person school is cancelled for the day.
    • Teachers will provide students with instructions and plans for the day so that they may participate in remote learning through their Google Classrooms and/or Remind.
  • Nothing will be different on these days for students who are enrolled in Royal Virtual Academy, or for students who were already scheduled to be in remote learning that day.

Four Possible Scenarios:

  1. Business as Usual. Not necessary to communicate or activate communication protocol. However, if questionable, notice will be put on Facebook.
  2. Late Start WITHOUT Emergency Snow Route. Used to buy more time if the situation is questionable and/or confusing. (Least recommended but sometimes necessary.)
  3. Late Start WITH Emergency Snow Route. Parents of affected students will be notified that we will be using emergency snow routes via School Messenger.
  4. Conversion to Online Learning. Decision based on buses’ ability to safely transport students to school, as well as input from other districts. The decision to convert to online learning after the late start protocol has been activated will be made no later than 7:00 AM.
